Market Bag
I was looking for a market bag pattern that would be suitable for replacing the plastic bags at the market. I came across one at Nancy's Crochet that was very close to what I was looking for. I modified her pattern to more closely resemble the size of a paper grocery sack. My version of her grocery tote bag is below.
Materials
Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn
Crochet hook size H / 5.0mm
1 Decorative Button
2 Sheets Plastic Canvas (optional)
Model made with Sugar ’n Cream
Measurements
12" wide x 6" deep x ?" tall (not including handles)
Gauge: Not critical.
Bag
Starting at bottom of bag, ch 40.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch and in ea ch across (38 hdc), turn.
Rows 2-16: Ch 1, hdc in ea st across. (38 hdc), turn.
Now work in rounds to make sides.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, hdc in ea st across, working across side edge, make 16 hdc evenly across, working across opposite long edge, hdc in ea ch across, working across last side edge, make 16 hdc evenly across. Join with sl st to first hdc. (108 hdc)
Rnds 2-3: Ch 1, hdc in same st as join and in ea st around. Join with sl st to first hdc. (108 hdc)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, ch 3, sk 2 hdc, sc in next hdc. Repeat from * around ending with hdc in 1st sc to form last loop.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around ending with hdc in 1st hdc to form last loop.
Rnds 6-31: Repeat Rnd 5. On rnd 31, end with ch 3 and join to first sc.
Rnd 32: Sl st into next loop, ch 1, 3 sc in each loop around. Join to 1st sc.
Rnd 33: Ch 1, hdc in same st as join and in ea st around. Join to 1st hdc.
Rnds 34-35: Repeat rnd 33. At end of rnd 33, fasten off and weave in ends.
Handles
Ch 61.
Row 1: Working in ridge on back side of chain, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (60 hdc).
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in ea hdc across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in ea hdc across, finish off, weave in ends.
Finishing
Sew ends of handles to each side of the bag 3" in from each end, placing edge of handle even with sc row. Sew decorative button in place according to picture. Optional: Cut 2 pieces of plastic canvas the size of the bottom of the bag and insert.
