Dark Shadows Afghan
I watch a lot of movies and TV DVDs. I never got to see the first run of Dark Shadows, The Revival, so I picked up the DVDs hoping the series would not be an embarrassment when compared to the original series. "I'm Victoria Winters..." is still resonant from my youth as my girlfriend and I would race home from school and plop ourselves down in front of the TV to see what drama Barnabas Collins and company would be facing that day, who'd get bit and who'd get the upper hand ~ Barnabas or Angelique? The Revival series started off slow, but moving through the episodes, I was not disappointed.
While I was watching the DVDs, I was trying to pick a new afghan pattern (from the one I had started) to make for my uncle for a Christmas gift. As I still had a lot of projects to complete, it needed to be quick to make. I finally gave up on the pattern searching and came up with my own after perusing a stitch book. Because I was watching the Collins family deal with their neverending bad luck while I was working on it, I've called this afghan Dark Shadows.
It makes up quick due to using 2 strands and a large hook. I finished this one in 5 days without killing myself. I simply worked through 2 skeins per day (about 2 hours) until it was done. This allowed me to work on other projects as well :)
Materials
8 - 5 oz. skeins variegated Red Heart SS
2 - 7 oz. skeins solid Red Heart SS
P / 11.5mm hook (Susan Bates)
Painted Desert and Dark Blue were the colors I used.
Finished Size
Approximately 47" x 61"
Notes
Afghan is worked with 2 strands of yarn throughout.
If you use a Boye P hook, it will come out slightly smaller.
INSTRUCTIONS
Ch 72.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (71 sc)
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as 1st dc + ch 1), turn; sk next st, dc in next st, * ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st; rep from * across (36 dc and 35 ch-1 sps)
Row 3: Ch 1 turn; sc in 1st dc, * working in front of next ch-1 sp, dc in st one row below, sc in next dc; rep from * across.
Rows 4 - 81: Rep Rows 2 and 3 alternately, ending with Row 3. Finish off.
EDGING
Since the body of the afghan is done entirely in variegated, I wanted a border that wouldn't get gobbled up in the colors. So...
Sc evenly around making 3 sc in each corner. Rep to complete 8 rounds. Finish off.
